My practice is grounded in painting and drawing but I have found that making haphazardly constructed objects, whether that be headdresses, creatures, puppets, dolls or props, may expand the potential of my images. Having dressed canvases in costumes and contrastingly clothed sculptures in paintings, I developed an interest in spectacle, narrative, drama, performance, staging and installation. I am often lost without the presence of the human figure and adopt polarising methods when working; on the one hand, my approach is methodical and repetitious, often resulting in an almost graphic style and on the other, it is frenzied and performative. Particularly when painting I prefer to work on a large scale and am drawn to the naivety and immediacy of visibly blunt brush marks.
