Maya Meelie Thorpe Nathan

My practice is inspired by my relationship with my brother, our unique connection and how we live alongside one and other. My work is an expression of the physicality of disability, whilst striving to capture the deeper sentiment and tenderness. This access and recognition has given me an unparalleled insight, which has proved invaluable in my discovery and understanding of his world.

Alongside, and in collaboration with this, my film work is a collection of interpretations that flow through my practice, like a visual diary. Following a journey of poetic language, and an exploration of what I believe.

Using imagery as a metaphor, which interprets the attitudes towards those individuals with a disability, I aim to challenge the depiction and exploitation of my subjects, whilst firmly holding onto the aesthetical power of the form.

In this, I hope others will contemplate their own gaze and way of looking, and embrace the positive effect of being captivated by the diversity that disability brings to our lives.
